Master of Arts in Islamic Studies with a Specialization In Religion and Contemporary Thought

The rationale of this program is founded on imparting quality education in Islamic Studies at the graduate level in light of developments unfolding in various societies. Each day witnesses the rise of new challenges which necessitate the involvement of researchers and specialists who have the right academic and technical expertise, are imbued with clarity of vision, and a spirit of tolerance toward other thought and cultures. Graduates will be able to address these challenges and contribute to the development of their societies in the light of modern civilisation needs.

Admission Requirements:

Structure:

  • Total of 36 credit hours including 4 core courses (12 credit hours) and 4 elective courses (12 credit hours)
  • A thesis (12 credit hours) upon completion of the courses and passing the comprehensive exam

Core Courses:

  • Contemporary Studies in Qura'n and Hadith
  • Atlas of modern Islamic thought
  • Human rights and women
  • Studies in Islamic Aqeedah

Elective Courses:

  • Studies in Comparative religion
  • Texts on Comparative Kalam/Theology
  • Religion in modern theories
  • Trends in modern thought
  • Interaction of Islamic Thought with 'other' thoughts
  • Texts on Comparative Mysticism
  • History of Religion

Additional Preparatory Courses:

Students may be required to take non-credit courses to ensure the successful completion of their dissertation when the topic chosen warrants further coursework.
