

Dr. Hatem El-Karanshawy is the Founding Dean of QFIS. His efforts have been instrumental in building the Faculty from the ground up. He has come to QFIS with a long and distinguished career both in academia and policy. Before joining QFIS, Dr. Hatem was Professor of Finance, and Director of the Public Administration Program at the AmericanUniversity in Cairo. He was also Dean at the Faculty of Commerce in Al Azhar University. Dr. El-Karanshawy was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Egypt. He has and continues to advise extensively on Islamic Finance and economic development. In addition to advising the Prime Minister of Egypt and other senior Cabinet Members, he has contributed to negotiations with the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the US State Department. He is also member in the Arab-Japanese Dialogue Forum. Dr. El Karanshawy regularly participates and presents at international events and is an active member of several academic committees. Among, his numerous intellectual contributions are 30 articles and books related to economic development and Islamic Finance. Dr. El Karanshawy received his PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde, UK in 1976.
Mahmood Ahmad Ghazi (PhD Islamic Studies, University of Punjab) is Professor of Shariah and Law, International University, Islamabad. He is also Chairman, Shariah Board, State Bank of Pakistan; Chairman Shariah Advisory Cell, International University; and Chairman Shariah Supervisory Committee, Takaful Pakistan. He was President of International Islamic University. Dr. Ghazi has extensive experience teaching Islamic law and Jurisprudence, and historical development of Muslim political thought among other issues.
Dr. Monzer Kahf holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, US. He completed his undergraduate studies in business at the University of Damascus, followed by a graduate degree in Social and Economic Planning at the UN Institute of Planning in Damascus. Dr. Kahf is the recipient of the Islamic Development Bank Prize for Islamic Economics (2001). He lectures internationally on Islamic financial laws, regulations, economics and finance. He continues his activities as a consultant, trainer, and lecturer in these fields. Before joining QFIS, Dr. Kahf was Professor of Islamic Economics and Banking at Yarmouk University, Jordan. He was also Senior Research Economist at the Islamic Research and Training Instituteof the Islamic Development Bank, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Kahf has authored 28 books and more than 83 articles on Awqaf, Zakah, Islamic finance and banking and other areas of Islamic economics.
Dr. Tariqullah Khan is currently Professor with the Faculty of Islamic Studies in its MSc Islamic Finance Program. Before joining the Faculty in August 2009 he worked as the Division Chief Islamic Banking and Finance at the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Jeddah. At IRTI he also officiated as Division Chief, Islamic Economics and Development Cooperation and worked as Editor of the Islamic Economic Studies. He was also the technical Anchor of the Ten-Year Framework and Strategies for the Development of Islamic Financial Services Industry - a joint IDB and Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) initiative and Co-Leader of the IDB Islamic Financial Services Development program and a member of the IFSB Working Group on Risk Management. He worked as a member of the International Advisory Committee of the QFIS for establishing the MSc Islamic Finance Program and recently worked on behalf of the Dean QFIS as a member of the Visiting Certification Commission, Ministry of Higher Education Government of UAE. He has contributed several research papers in the areas of risk management, regulation and supervision and financial stability and Islamic financial sector development and has developed a number of international flagship conferences in these areas and presented papers and lectures and edited conference proceedings. Dr. Khan holds BA and MA Economics degrees from the Karachi University, Pakistan and a PhD degree from the Loughborough University, United Kingdom.
Dr. Rasha Al-Disuqi is a world renowned Islamic scholar and author. She has lectured extensively at prestigious academic institutions in the world, including Al-Azhar University in Cairo, as well numerous universities in the United States. She holds a doctorate in Islamic Studies from the University of Wales, and is presently Associate Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the Qatar Foundation. She is teaching in the Contemporary Fiqh and Diploma Programs several courses; Human Rights and Women, Juristic Biological Issues, Islamic Theology, Atlas of Contemporary Thought, Comparative Religions and others. Dr. Al-Disuqi published both in Arabic and English in many of the world's leading scholarly publications. She is the author of the best-selling book The Resurgent Voice of Muslim Women, Muslim Family Fiqh and Unveiling Jihad: The Difference Between Resistance & Terrorism. Dr. Al-Disuqi has managed to clarify misconceptions and contributed to building bridges of communication between non-Muslims and Muslims, at both the academic professional and public levels.
Dr. Jasser Auda is an Associate Professor at Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), with the Public Policy in Islam Program. He is a founding member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, based in Dublin; member of the Academic Board of the International Institute of Islamic Thought in London, UK; fellow of the International Institute of Advanced Systems Research (IIAS), Canada; member of the Board of Trustees of the Global Civilizations Study Centre (GCSC), UK; member of the Executive Board of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS), UK; member of the Forum Against Islamophobia and Racism (FAIR), UK; and a consultant to islamonline.net. He has a PhD from University of Wales, UK, on the philosophy of Islamic law; a PhD from the University of Waterloo, Canada, on systems analysis; and a Masters of Jurisprudence from the Islamic American University, Michigan, on Islamic legal purposes (maqasid al-shariah). He received traditional studies in Quran and Islamic sciences in Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo; was a founding director of the Maqasid Research Center in Philosophy of Islamic law in London, UK; and was a visiting lecturer to Alexandria University Faculty of law, Egypt, the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Canada, and the Islamic Fiqh Academy of India. He has lectured on Islamic law, its philosophy, and its relation to the issues of Muslim minorities and policy in a couple dozen countries around the world. He was a contributor to policy reports related to Muslim minorities and Islamic education to the UK Ministry of Communities and the Higher Education Funding Council of England, and has written a number of books, the latest of which in English is: Maqasid Al-Shariah as Philosophy of Islamic Law: A Systems Approach, London: IIIT, 2008, and in Arabic: Averröes's Premier of the Jurist: Synopsis
Dr Nahed Ezzeldeen Associate Professor of Public Policy, Ph.D in the philosophy of Political Science, From Faculty of Economics & Political Science- Cairo University, 2003. Research interests are in the fields of : Public Policy, Comparative Politics, Civil Society, Egyptian and Arab political Systems, Human Rights, Labor rights and relationships, development and Democracy.
Dr. Mohammed El Gammal obtained his doctorate in Islamic Thought and Economics with high honours and recommendation for publication from the College of Shariah and Law, Al Azhar University, Cairo. He also obtained his master's degree with high honours and a bachelor degree with honours from Al Azhar. Prior to joining QFIS, Dr. El Gammal was Assistant Professor in the College of Shariah and Law, Al Azhar University. He was also a member of the Quality Assurance Committee. He has contributed to several renowned volumes in Islamic studies including the Fikr El Islamy (Gamal Abdel Nasser) Volume, and the Ma'lamat Al Qawa'id Al Fiqhiya Project of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Dr. El Gammal spent several years as a research consultant to Harf, and Dar El Ta'sil while studying in Egypt. He has several Arabic publications including The Application of Customs in Contemporary Financial Transactions (2007), The Economic Value of Time in Contemporary Financial Transactions (upcoming), and several research papers.
Dr. Basma Abdelgafar obtained her doctorate in Public Policy from Carleton University. She has received several prestigious awards including the Nippon Foundation Scholarship, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Award, and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation Fellowship, two of Canada's highest honours. Dr. Abdelgafar has performed extensive research on intellectual property rights, innovation systems, and the pharmaceutical industries particularly of developing countries. Past positions include Special Advisor to the President of the Canadian International Development Agency; Policy Analyst in the Canadian Federal Government; and Research Associate at Carleton University and the University of Toronto. Among her publications are The Illusive Trade off: Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation Systems, and Egypt's Pharmaceutical Industry, University of Toronto Press 2006, as well as several book chapters and articles.
