QFIS invited on 10th February 2010 a distinguished delegation from the United Kingdom. The delegation is led by Alderman Nick Anstee, the 682nd Lord Mayor of the City of London. Mr. Anstee took office on Friday 13th November 2009. As Lord Mayor he promotes the Square Mile as the world's leading international financial and business centre, and one of his aims is to sponsor the spread of financial literacy. Therefore, his interests extend outside the UK, and he has chosen to visit the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), a member of Qatar Foundation, to find out more about its role in the development of Islamic finance, and to explore potential cooperation between his centre in London and QFIS in Doha.
This visit is preceded by an earlier visit by two representatives from the British Embassy in Doha on January 25. Mr. Mark Ellam, director of Trade and Investment, and Mrs. Rachida Bouslama, Press and Public Affairs Officer. They stated that the visits of the Lord Mayor of the City of London to the Gulf region had become an annual event. Almost every February, the Lord Mayor visits Doha to discuss financial, trade and business issues with senior staff at the Central Bank and Qatar Financial Center. Recognizing QFIS's contribution in promoting Islamic finance and its academic and applied research, the British Embassy decided to include
QFIS on the Lord Mayor's agenda for a variety of reasons, among them is the British Embassy's increasing interest in Islamic finance.
The Lord Mayor, Mr. Anstee is one of those who work on opening the British market to the provision of Islamic financial services, including legal services, in the UK.
Mr. Ellam explained that Mr. Anstee represented businesses and stakeholders from the private sector who have direct interests in Islamic financial issues. Visiting QFIS will allow the British delegation to explore the finance situation in the region, and give them a chance to meet with QFIS finance students most of whom are employed as finance professionals and practitioners in the government and private sectors.
QFISoffers two Islamic finance programmes one a Diploma and the other is a Masters Degree. It is also involved in Islamic economics and finance through conferences and its research activities. It basis its studies on responding to contemporary changes and offering solutions based on enduring Islamic principles.
Mr. Anstee's professional experience ranges from chartered accountancy to international business, as well as educational and professional executive finance. He is a Senior Director at the international law firm SJ Berwin. Mr. Anstee is engaged along with his family in charitable work in the City, including the Red Cross and St John Ambulance. He is an active athlete and looks forward to completing his 17th London Marathon in April 2010.
This visit represents part of the QFIS international outreach. The QFIS vision is to contribute to the development of contemporary Islamic studies.
